About Standoff
Standoff is a duel of bluff and memory. Two armies of fourteen, every soldier hooded and cloaked, and one question on every move: what is that, and what does it think mine is?
Each soldier is a rock, a paper or a scissors - and it stays a secret until it fights. Then both sides see it, for good. The flag can walk, but never attack. The trapdoor can’t attack either, but anyone who attacks it falls through - and it stays put, still hidden, until you choose to walk it elsewhere.
Take the flag and you win on the spot. Run the enemy out of weapons and you win too. And if the clock runs out first, the bigger army takes it.
How it plays
Hide
Place your flag and your trapdoor in your two home rows. The other twelve soldiers are dealt around them.
Advance
Every soldier is cloaked - rock, paper or scissors, and nobody across the board knows which.
Fight
Rock breaks scissors, scissors cut paper, paper covers rock. A tie throws again. Once a soldier fights, everyone knows what it is.
Take the flag
Capture their flag, or disarm their army, before the clock runs out.
What's in it
- A 7 by 6 board, two home rows each
- Fourteen soldiers - four rock, four paper, four scissors, a flag and a trapdoor
- The trapdoor takes down whoever attacks it and stays where it is, still hidden
- Twenty-second turns on a twelve-minute clock
- Hidden means hidden - the server never tells your screen what you haven't seen
